American Idol season six winner Jordin Sparks will be hitting the Broadway stage to perform in the musical In The Heights for 12 weeks.
The singer will play the role of a struggling college student named Nina Rosario in the Grammy-winning musical, which follows the lives of three generations of residents in New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood.
The musical, which is now in its third year on Broadway, is directed by Thomas Kail. Sparks will begin her run with In The Heights on August 19.
“It’s always been one of my dreams to perform on Broadway,” Sparks said in a statement. “This is a brand new experience for me. I look so forward to spending time in New York City and joining this talented cast and my favorite new musical.”
The youngest American Idol winner to date, Sparks released a self-titled album in 2007, with three tracks – “Tattoo,” “No Air” and “One Step At A Time” – all landing in the Billboard Pop chart’s top five.
