With nearly four million friends and counting, [lastfm]John Mayer[/lastfm] has shut down his Twitter account.

With the singer’s recent Battle Studies tour “now at a close and a return to the studio planned,” he has ended his days of tweeting, a rep for the artist said earlier this week. Mayer hasn’t fully retired from e-communication, however, and says he will continue to update fans through his blog.

Three days before closing the account, Mayer tweeted a “Self Portrait of The Artist Three Days Before His Metaphoric Retirement.” The twit-pic featured a black and white image of the singer.

After a poorly received Playboy interview, Mayer spoke out against social networking at a February concert, saying: “I’m out. I’m done. I just want to play my guitar.”

In the meantime, Mayer still has his blog. And a Facebook. And a Tumblr.
