Does being addicted to Diet Coke mean I’m an alcoholic? No. But, a new study shows that some popular soft drinks including Coca Cola and Pepsi DO contain trace amounts of alcohol. Before you start worrying about how many soda refills your kids had at Applebees last night check the facts.
The National Consumption Institute in Paris tested 19 different soft drinks and found that 10 of them including Coca-Cola, Pepsi Cola, Coca-Cola Classic Light and Coke Zero contained approximately .0001 percent alcohol. The study was published in the French magazine 60 Millions de Consommateurs. The only sodas NOT found to contain alcohol were the cheaper store brands.
The alcohol, apparently, shows up in the process of making the beverages. Although both Pepsi and Coca Cola deny adding alcohol to their sodas they do suggest that natural fruit can ferment and produce minute traces of alcohol.
