Over one million people die by suicide every year worldwide vs. an estimated 10-20 million non-fatal attempts. The World Health Organization estimates that its the 13th leading cause of death worldwide.
Celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month, Doctor Julie Goldstein has received a grant for the third and final year. This grant will help create a suicide prevention for the district.
There are several components towards this grant. One being able to have supportive partners. Some partners are with public agencies, private community groups, and anyone who is willing to train to look for symptoms.
Washington D.C area has the lowest suicide rates although they do have high attempt rate. Shockingly Goldstein sees more elementary and middle school students then high school.
Anyone can make an attempt so get involved by looking for the red flags and support ones who are willing to talk.
