I was happy to hear that Jessie J expressed her disgust over the criticism of Lady GaGa’s 25 pound weight gain. For the record, I’m disgusted and ANNOYED. After all, Gaga isn’t morbidly obese.
Think about it; what if you were one of the most famous performers in the world? You’d barely be getting rest, you would be traveling all over the world, under stress, etc. Imagine how hard it would be to maintain a consistent weight.
What truly disappoints me is Hollywood’s continual focus of attention on physicality. Thankfully, Lady Gaga knows how to handle criticism well.
The reality is people have weight fluctuations all of the time; it’s a normal part of life. Continually pointing out weight issues is entirely counter-productive to helping women overcome insecurities about their physical appearance.
Powerful Hollywood media outlets have an obligation to perpetuate goodness rather than to be critical. I always hear Hollywood’s talking heads saying that people should be treated based upon the content of their character.
Perhaps this is a good time for many powerful people in the industry to start reflecting on the negative attention they bring to role models like Lady Gaga and to start living up to their ideals. #justsayin
