If she said it once, she said it one hundred times. My best friend Chip McFLY’s vet warned me about the dangers of retractable leashes. Sure they seem great, Fido gets some extra room to run and the owner feels a little less militant about the whole ‘Leash Thing.’ Be warned. They break! Chip’s vet Dr Katy Nelson, hosts of The Pet Show on News Channel 8 and she’s the reason he is trying to shape up. Chip is a shelter dog from the Washington Humane Society and I fell victim to ‘shelter guilt.’ I fed him way too much to make up for his hardships early in life. The poor guy was found behind a Whole Foods looking for a bite to eat at just five months old he was brought in.
We were going to run from the Georgetown Waterfront to the Lincoln Memorial along the Potomac River and back. On our return trip Chip spotted a squirrel. He hates squirrels! Naturally Chip took off after the little critter, to I guess being him in for questioning, and I stopped the spool of leash. The leash broke. The extra slack spun back into the plastic handle and I could feel it spiraling around inside. Chip. Was. On. The. Loose. Thank God he listened when I told him to sit and we were luckily not that close to Rock Creek Parkway. I grabbed him and we made it home safe. That could have so easily not been the case. Dr. Katy, you were right. Retractable leashes are no good!
