I’m not gonna lie, getting to hang with Katy Perry at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, have an exclusive interview with Chelsea Clinton and meeting Savannah Guthrie were all pretty cool experiences…
However, the recent event that really stopped me in my tracks was “Best Buddies of Virginia’s” annual “Life Is Sweet” gathering.
I’ve been lucky to have made incredible Buddies all over Northern Virginia and the District as a part of the organization’s advisory board and volunteer.
“Life is Sweet” brings together the area’s top chefs and pairs them with a buddy. They spend time creating a delicious dessert, perfecting the recipe and serving it at this one of a kind tasting.
Everyone in attendance walks away with a better understanding of the culture of inclusion that Best Buddies works so hard to harbor in middle schools, high schools and colleges throughout the Commonwealth and the World.
Va. Congressman Jim Moran shared his experiences with Best Buddies and commended the work of parents, teachers, advisers and volunteers who give their time. This fun and moving evening really puts so much into perspective in our over-scheduled and sweating-the-small-stuff lives.
Thanks to all of the restaurants who donated their time and energy to make Life is Sweet so delicious:
Chef Chris Hutcheson of District Commons, Chef Chris Kujala of Marcel’s, Chef David Guas of Bayou Bakery, Chef Gian Piero Mazzi of Piero’s Corner, Chef James Foley of Eurest Catering, Chef Kate Jansen of Willow, Chef Laurie Weber of The Swiss Bakery, Chef Patrick Bazin of Bazin’s on Church Street, Chef Penny Karas of Hello Cupcake, Chef RJ Cooper of Rogue 24, Chef Scot Harlan of Green Pig Bistro, Chef Sean Sasser of RIS, Chef George Fassiadis of 2100 Prime, Susan Soorenko of Moorenko’s Ice Cream Café, Melanie Parker of Black’s Restaurant Group, and our Life is Sweet Chair Chef Susan Wallace of BlackSalt.
