One of the nation’s most expensive college, Skidmore College in upstate New York, is offering a new course this summer: Miley Cyrus.
According to a leaked syllabus, the course will focus on Cyrus’ rollercoaster career as a way to learn about race, gender, class, and media issues. The course description says it will look at the “ongoing media frenzy focused on Miley Cyrus’ public image, music, and body.”
Visiting assistant professor Carolyn Chernoff will lead the summer class which seems completely in her wheelhouse. Her biography page on the Skidmore website says she focuses on “the role of culture in reproducing and transforming social inequality, and research conflict around diversity and difference.”
Skidmore isn’t the first school to offer classes on celebrities. Rutgers offers a class on Beyonce while Georgetown University has a class called “The Sociology of Hip-Hop: The Urban Theodicy of Jay-Z.”
