Singer Mary Lambert joined The Tommy Show on Friday for its first Facebook Live to chat about everything from her cat’s farm-to-table diet to performing with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis at the 2014 Grammy Awards.
Lambert hit it big when she was featured on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ LGBTQ-rights song “Same Love.” She drew on her experiences as a lesbian to co-write the double-platinum hit, and went on to release her solo debut single “She Keeps Me Warm,” which samples its chorus.
Recently, the singer parted ways with her label and struck out on her own, an intimidating move that paid off. “I love the business side of being an artist,” she told The Tommy Show.
At the request of fans watching on Facebook Live, Lambert shared the story behind her vibrant tattoos. The colorful flowers inked on her arm are dedicated to her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who all planted pansies, and for her home state of Washington, whose flower is the rhododendron.
She also talked about her new music video for “Hang Out With You,” which stars her partner and a whole lot of dogs.
Lambert’s upcoming album will be recorded at her home in Amherst, Massachusetts, which she shares with her collaborator and partner Michelle as well as her finicky-eater cat.

Lambert described what it was like to sing at the Grammy Awards as well. Lambert, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performed “Same Love” to accompany a mass wedding of gay and straight couples, presided over by Queen Latifah.
It was a powerful moment for her, she said, as she thought of young LGBT people watching the broadcast.
“As a Christian lesbian…I just thought of my 17-year-old self, when I was struggling to come out, and being like ‘Woah, it’s okay, these people have my back,” she said.
