My son Rocco will be 4 at the end of the month. He’s been to a number of other birthday parties recently and he knows his time is coming. This is the first time he’s really been aware of what is going on and he keeps asking how many days until his party.
I’m working on planning it right now and to be totally honest, I’m a little surprised by how expensive the typical party venues are!
Our house is out of the question because it’s just too small. I did a lot of house parties for my daughter (she’s 12 now) but when we moved here from Florida we had to downsize and we just don’t have room.
I received a number of great suggestions from members of the Montgomery County Mom Facebook Group, but when I looked into them I was a bit sticker-shocked.
Nature center at one of the MoCo parks $225 and up, not including food.
Those bounce house places are about $250 and I don’t like them for kids this little anyway… my son always seems to get hurt and he doesn’t like to go alone. Yes, at other parties I jump with him, don’t judge.
Gym/activity centers $350 and up at a few different places, and that doesn’t include food.
Even getting a permit to have a party at a local park is $75 which includes absolutely nothing but permission to use the public space. Not a bad price but then what are we going to do with the kids? And what if it’s too hot? What if it rains?
So I have no idea what we’re going to do. I’m actually not against spending $300-350 on a birthday party if I have to… OK if I’m being honest, it’s probably going to be closer to $400-500 once we pay for cake, paper products, balloons, other food, etc.
But my fiance thinks it’s way too much. He actually said to me last night, “he’ll never remember that he didn’t have a party anyway” as if totally robbing him of a celebration with his friends is OK!
Are we really going to tell this sweet little face he can’t have a birthday party?
No. No we are not.
Last year we celebrated his birthday while we were visiting my family, we did a joint party with my cousin’s little boy at their house. My sister made the cakes (yes she made that sweet Blaze cake), my cousin provided all of the decorations and supplies, and we paid for the pizza. The year before that we were in the process of moving here so we didn’t really do anything for his 2nd birthday. I think this year we can splurge a bit, right?
So how much is too much to spend?
