A Latina waitress working at a restaurant in Harrisonburg, Virginia, got a racist message instead of a tip recently. Thanks to her grandfather, the story went viral on social media.
Eighteen-year-old Sadie Elledge was working at Jess’ Lunch in Harrisonburg when she got a receipt that said “We only tip citizens” where the tip amount should have been, CBS affiliate WUSA-TV reported.
Her grandfather, John Elledge, posted a photo of the check to Facebook, calling the customer “a total piece of dung.”
Sadie was born in the United States and has Honduran and Mexican heritage, the Washington Post reported.
As the story gained traction on the internet, her grandfather posted the restaurant Sadie works at and revealed the identity of one of the two customers on Facebook. “Ironically, [she] is friends with Sadie’s mother, Elsa Elledge, and cousin, Olivia Morales,” he said in the post.
Hundreds of well-wishers on social media have sought a way to send money to Sadie, who has instead directed them to contribute to New Bridges Immigrant Resource Center and the Samuel R. Bowman II Scholarship for Hispanic students.
