Katy Perry Feels Sorry for ‘Catfish’ Man

Spencer Morrill believed he was dating the singer for six years.

One young man experienced a rather extreme version of catfishing. Spencer Morrill met a woman online purporting to be Katy Perry and for six years he believed they were dating. He even went so far as to purchase an engagement ring even though they’d only spoken on the phone once during that time period.

Morrill’s story aired on MTV’s series Catfish: The TV Show, and when Perry got wind of it she couldn’t help but feel sorry for the whole situation, even though she had no part of it. Speaking in an interview on Wednesday (August 24), she admitted that a friend had forwarded her the story, but she didn’t want to read it. “I just think it’s really unfortunate and very sad,” she said (via NME).

She added, “You know, like, my heart goes out to [Morrill] actually because anybody that’s been fooled like that or just, you know, people have dreams, and people live in different parts of world where not everything is always so accessible… I felt bad for him, and so I didn’t really like to indulge in that.”

Instead of communicating with Perry online, Morrill had actually been talking to a woman named Harried from Gloucester. On the episode, she apologized to Morrill for leading him on.
